Website Backup Policy

Question:

Does Stargate maintain backups of our website content?

Answer:

Stargate maintains backups of our standard web hosting packages, but they are intended for system restorations only (e.g. server failure, system errors, etc.)

Customers are expected to keep regular, off-site backups of their own websites, either through maintenance contracts offered by their website developers, or by using the tools provided in our cPanel interface for making regular backups. Most publishing platforms (e.g. WordPress, Drupal) have add-ons available for this task as well. WordPress customers are advised to follow these backup recommendations, especially before making upgrades. (Please be sure to regularly save and off-load your backups from the server; leaving them there consumes your disk quota and leaves the backups as vulnerable as the site itself.)

In some emergencies we can restore files for an individual website, but the work involved would be considered billable. Recovering website databases requires additional effort because our backups are file-based rather than SQL-based.

Customers with dedicated web hosting (private physical or virtual servers) may choose to purchase additional backup and recovery services provided by Stargate.

Any website created by our Creative Services department is protected by the development copies we maintain elsewhere.
